How to Win at Roulette

How to win at roulette. A question a child might ask, but not a childish question. (Just kidding.) I actually have a short and simple answer to that question that will make a lot of sense. The best way to win at roulette is to get lucky. Like any game with a negative expectation, the longer you play, the more likely it is that the house edge will ensure that you lose money.

One strategy that might interest a roulette player is the maximum boldness strategy. This is a strategy where your goal is to double your money. In a negative expectation game, your best chance of doubling your money is to bet it all once on red or black, or even or odd, and cross your fingers. You'll have a 47% or so chance of doubling your money.

On the other hand, if you make multiple smaller bets, the more likely you are to go broke before doubling your money. This is because the house edge applies over time, so every spin of the wheel, and every bet, reduces your chances of doubling your money. This maximum boldness betting strategy works for blackjack or any other negative expectation game too.

On the other hand, if you had an advantage, like if you were playing perfect strategy blackjack and counting cards, the edge would actually be yours, and not the house's. In that case, the situation is just the opposite. The casino's best chance of getting all your money is if you make fewer, larger bets. And your best chance of doubling your money, if you have the advantage, is to bet as little as possible to avoid risk of ruin. This is called a minimum boldness strategy, and it's also one of the reasons casinos have betting maximums in place.

My best advice about winning at roulette is to just realize that it's a negative expectation game and accept that, and then proceed to enjoy the game anyway. Take the opportunity to chat with the other players, enjoy some comp drinks, and if you get lucky and hit a few wins, then good for you. And if not, then surely you're not playing with money you can't afford to lose are you? (You should never play with money you can't afford to lose.)

Those are my tips for winning at roulette.
